The Peruvian capital Lima is also the largest city in the country. Together with the port city of Callao, it forms the so-called metropolitan area. The city of Antofagasta in northern Chile lies on the edge of the Atacama desert. More than 300,000 people live in the city. The name comes from the Quechua language Antofagasta, meaning "village on the Great Salt Lake."
