Kilwa Kisiwani is a community on an island off the southern coast of present-day Tanzania in eastern Africa. Historically, it was the center of the Kilwa Sultanate, a medieval sultanate whose authority at its height in the 13th-15th centuries AD stretched the entire length of the Swahili Coast. Kilwa Kisiwani has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the nearby stonetown Songo Mnara.

Assumption Island is a small island located in the Indian Ocean north of Madagascar and is part of the country of the Seychelles that have been leased to India. The Assumption Island day gecko, a subspecies of gecko is found only on this island.

Aldabra is the world's second largest coral atoll. Uninhabited and extremely isolated, Aldabra is virtually untouched by humans. It consists of four islets around a large shallow lagoon, encircled by fringing coral reef. It is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, has about two thirds of the world population of Giant tortoises.

Astove Island is one of the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, and is popular for fishing and study of ecology.
