Founded in the 16th century, Sao Filipe is considered to be the second oldest city in the whole of Cape Verde. The city is clean and charming with its immaculate Portuguese houses and flowers growing all over the place. The black-sand beach at the base of the city's cliffs is as beautiful to look at as it is unsafe to use for swimming - the currents are strong and the waves are dangerously high.
