Nouméa is the capital of the French overseas territory New Caledonia and most rapidly growing city in the South Pacific. The 1,500-square-foot island was discovered in 1606 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernández de Quirós. It is the southernmost island of the island nation of Vanuatu.
